January 30, 2018

Hey Gang,

We have an ice jam forming at East Branch of Swift Brook bridge on ITS#83 between Sherman and Whetstone Falls. Hopefully this jam can be removed by excavator on Thursday and the waters going around the bridge can recede. Riders can still proceed as the water is less that 6" deep and not a long distance.

We are receiving 6-8" of new snow today, and should be out to groom on Thursday. Both ITS#83 & ITS#81 were groomed before the storm, so my report is as follows::

ITS#83 - Sherman/Whetstone Falls - will be groomed on Thursday,conditions will be good/excellent.

ITS#81 - Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cutoff -- will be groomed on Thursday/Friday - no issues on this trail, conditions should be excellent.

NOTE:: Have heard form Nate Peters,Trailmaster of Mattawamkeag Roadrunners - our sister club. Nate states that they have not been to the cutoff because of flooding issues. (2) Do not chase or harass deer & moose - it is ILLEGAL!! Ride safe & to the right!!

Hi Gang,

After receiving 4-5” of good snow last night, as of 1:00 this afternoon we are looking at hard rain, with the possibility of an inch and a half of rain over the next 24 hrs. As of right now, we are hoping that this rain will subside and leave us with some base. All grooming has stopped until trail conditions can be assessed.

I suspect that ITS# 83 – Sherman/Whetstone Falls will have water problems, as this trail has a lot of woods and swamp.

ITS#81 – Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cutoff should hold up fine if we don’t get 2”of rain. Municipal Trail#70 – Benedicta/Whetstone Falls is closed due to logging.

Hi Gang,

With 1-2”rain coming Thursday night and Friday, the Snowgang is concentrating on getting all trails flat and ready. ITS#83 – Sherman/Whetstone Falls is being groomed today, and ITS#81 – Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag will be groomed tomorrow. Municipal Trail#70 – Benedicta/Whetstone Falls is CLOSED for the season due to heavy logging. Conditions on all groomed trails are considered good/excellent at this time. Riders need to be aware that ALL trails are being used by deer, moose and other critters --- give them the right of way – and no chasing, it is a law!!!! Ride safe and to the right!!

Hi Gang,

We received up to 12-14” of new snow on Christmas Day. All trails are being ridden by club officers to spot any damage and new blowdowns. We are in hopes to be grooming by the weekend, before the next storm hits. ITS# 81 – Sherman/Benedicta/Mattawamkeag Cutoff is all ready to go, ITS# 83 – Sherman/Whetstone is being cleared again and new blowdowns cut as I write, Municipal Trail #70 – Benedicta/Whetstone Falls is CLOSED for the season due to a large logging operation. Dangerously cold temps. may hamper some grooming efforts, depending just how cold the wind chills are. We will NOT send operators out in a dangerous situation. Be patient, it’s early season riding!!
